Rashid Latif banned

Dated: December 06, 2004

After hearing of the recent disturbing news regarding Rashid Latif may i offer my deep regret at the sorry position Rashid Latif has been pushed into. This is a man that has mentored many young people through out his carer from children to teenagers to adults. I am at a total loss as to the severity of the punishment. Surely we need to understand a situation before taking such steps and come to mutual understanding.

It can easily be said that any person who cares for the safety and well being of others has a big heart. To prevent a potential danger in this case the wicktet and to notify the relevent parties is in no means wrong. May i make a point that in the United Kingdom, standard practice says that all areas should be passed fit and certified for the safety of the group or individuals and the relevent insurance covered in case of an accident, be it the playing area or the changing rooms. Therfore may i make a polite suggestion to the P.C.B. that they undertake a thourough investigation of all cricket wickets and stadiums for the benifit of our cricketers of Pakistan and guests ,this should also include seating areas ect.

May i also suggest that we educate our umpires in respect of health and safety issues and that they sign relevent documents before each match and forward it to the relevent parties. Many cricketers rely heavily on cricket as their main income and need as much support as they can. From every negative their should be a positive messege, but a ban or fine is not always the solution. Our groundsman must also be educated in this respect and should have a check list and provide regular ground reports to their associations and to the PCB. May i suggest that match referees are armed with a digital recorders and take daily video analysis of the wicket and submit this to the board with a report. We cannot afford to lose role models such as Rashid Latif. U.K.
