Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to correct the logo of the National senior team before embarking on the mantra of ‘Team Pakistan.’

Applauding the Board’s decision to go for a new slogan of ‘Team Pakistan’ for the national side and doing away with the old slogan of ‘Proud to be a Pakistani’, Rashid said the Board also needed to correct the Pakistan logo of the team.

"The present logo has the word Pakistan inscribed on it in Urdu. But the problem is that they are dots (Nuqtas) in the word Pakistan. Whereas originally and the proper way is that the word Pakistan didn’t have these dots on it," he reminded.

Rashid who has played 37 Tests and 168 One-day Internationals besides leading the team in 1998 and 2003, said that since the Board had embarked upon a new mantra for the team he felt it was necessary to get back to the original and proper logo on the Pakistan cap and blazers. "First they should set this thing right and then work on the ‘Team Pakistan’ mantra," he added.

He also recalled that the slogan ‘Proud to be a Pakistani’ had been discarded soon after he took over as captain after the 2003 World Cup. "This slogan was the brainchild of the former Pakistan team manager Brigadier (retd) Khawaja Nasir. But after I became captain I asked the Board to discard it on the Pakistan T-shirts and training shirts because it spelled individualism."

"My argument was that once a player wore the Pakistan shirt he was already proud to be a Pakistani. The slogan ‘Proud to be a Pakistani’ gave the impression that this was not the case with the players," Rashid added.

Supporting the move to rename the senior team as ‘Team Pakistan’, he said such things mattered a lot and made a difference to the team spirit. "It might sound like a minor thing but it matters a lot for the players. The Board should spare no effort to market this ‘Team Pakistan’ slogan aggressively before the next tournament," he stated.

Meanwhile a PCB official confirmed that final approval for officially launching the new slogan ‘Team Pakistan’ would be taken from the Advisory panel at its scheduled meeting early next month. "We have started working on different designs and other material to promote the new slogan," he said.
